Committee Description

The Martin Administration plans to provide students with various opportunities to engage with politics. Today’s political climate necessitates that one have a good understanding of contemporary issues and elections and that is exactly what the Civic Engagement committee seeks to do. The Administration will do this by helping Carolina students to discover, inform and amplify their voices, ultimately creating a more civically engaged student body.

Committee Goals for the 2019-2020 Academic Year

  • Establish a polling place on campus
  • Encourage students to engage with student government and UNC Administration on campus issues
  • Encourage participation in local politics
  • Make voting opportunities more accessible to students
  • Advocate for the use of student IDs as viable photo IDs for voting
  • Foster political dialogue between student groups, committees, faculty, administration and political officials

 


Meet Kala.

Kala Mitchell, kamitch@live.unc.edu

Kala serves as one of the Civic Engagement Committee co-chairs for the Undergraduate Executive Branch.

She is a sophomore pursuing a degree in Business. Outside of Student Government, she serves as the treasurer for the Chapel Hill Chapter of Queen in You and serves on the Political action committee and the service and action committee for the Black Student Movement. Kala first joined student government in the 2018-2019 academic year as a member of the the Civic Engagement Committee.

 

Meet Nick.

Nick Battaile, nickorb@live.unc.edu

Nick serves as one of the Civic Engagement Committee co-chairs for the Undergraduate Executive Branch.

He is a junior pursuing a double major in Political Science and Public Policy with a minor in History. Outside of Student Government, he writes for the Editorial Board of the Carolina Political Review, the publication for UNC’s Institute of Politics. Nick first joined student government in the 2018-2019 school year as a member of the Civic Engagement Committee. Nick is also an avid New York Times crossword solver, part-time jogger, and plays guitar.
