Committee Description

With the increasingly dangerous effects of the climate crisis being seen globally, the Moseley Administration believes that UNC’s students and administration must take action to promote environmental and social sustainability on our campus. Student activists at Carolina have a long history of leading the charge towards a more sustainable future. As representatives of the student body, we will do everything in our power to provide space for student environmental activists to voice their concerns while holding the University accountable for its lack of concrete and transparent action to mitigate the climate crisis.

Committee Projects for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

Three Zeros – Once a major part of Carolina culture, the Three Zeros Roadmap has been continually delayed. We hope to continue the push for the release of the plan and work with the newly formed Sustainability Commision to empower the Student Body to bring their initiatives to life. The first deliverable is the plan itself, which will likely inform new projects.

Greek Life – Last year’s Greek Life subcommittee was able to make massive progress in their initiatives. We hope they will continue the work in the coming school year. Current projects center on recycling in fraternity houses and improved sustainability for in-house dining, including eliminating plastic utensils.

Environmental Funding & Trainings – Last year, a subcommittee was working to get a bill passed in the Senate to get funding incentives for clubs to have more zero-waste events and take more measures to be environmentally sustainable. The bill was not passed, but they are hoping to continue their work to allocate funding through the Senate or the Executive Branch for increasing the environmental sustainability of the large number of organizations at UNC. Furthermore, this committee is working on developing training for students and organizations to recognize their environmental impact and plan concrete tasks to reduce this impact.

Study Abroad Offset Program – One of the ideas Reeves brought to the table in his platform was to develop a program to offset the carbon emissions for study abroad flights. We’re not exactly sure what this will look like yet, but are interested in using this as a step towards carbon neutrality.

Sustainability Social and Earth Day – The events planning subcommittee is responsible for planning the sustainability social in the fall and Earth Day in the spring. Both events bring together a large number of UNC environmental organizations and students interested in sustainability. Traditionally, planning these events involves heavy collaboration with the Three Zeros Office.

Green Labs – Given the coronavirus pandemic and measures that will be put in place in the fall semester to prevent the spread of the virus, it is important to consider the environmental aspects of these changes. With an increase in glove and mask usage as well as research efforts, it will be important to ensure that waste is reduced as much as possible. To do this we hope to work with Green Labs at UNC to implement glove and mask recycling around campus and other measures to ensure that we are taking environmental sustainability into consideration.
