REQUIRING THAT THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL USE SELLERS AND CONTRACTORS WHO SUPPORT AND UPHOLD REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM
WHEREAS, the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) has overturned the Court’s previous ruling in Roe v. Wade (1974) and thus removed the constitutional right to an abortion in the United States; and
WHEREAS, this decision threatens the right of many people across the United States to make intimate and private medical decisions; and
WHEREAS, it is the official opinion of the Vann Administration that all people should have the right to make private decisions for their individual bodies and are entitled to comprehensive reproductive healthcare; and
WHEREAS, it is the official opinion of the Nollert Administration of the Graduate and Professional Student Government that all people should have the right to make private decisions for their own bodies and are entitled to comprehensive reproductive healthcare;
BE IT, THEREFORE, I, TALIAJAH M. VANN, Student Body President of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, by the authority vested in me by the Joint Code of the Student Government and the Undergraduate Student Code of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, do hereby order:
- That it shall be prohibited for the Undergraduate Student Government Executive Branch to contract or expend funds to any individual, business, or organization which actively advocates to further limit by law access to reproductive healthcare, including, though not limited to, contraception and induced abortions; and
- That the Executive Branches shall prefer to contract individuals, businesses, and organizations that provide to their employees a comprehensive suite of reproductive healthcare benefits; and
- That it shall be the duty of the Organizational Treasurer of the Executive Branch and of any officer who expends funds to ensure compliance with this order; and
- That case-by-case exceptions to this order may be granted only with the written consent of the Student Body President; and
- That notice of these provisions shall be provided to the Speaker of the Undergraduate Senate and to the chairs and vice-chairs of all standing committees of the Undergraduate Senate.
