Recontexualization and Removal of Symbols of Oppression on Campus

  • The Martin Administration will stand with members of the UNC community: students, faculty, and alumni, who for decades have opposed the placement of Silent Sam in McCorkle Place and on campus. The presence of Confederate memorials on campus glorifies white supremacy and sends a message to students of color that their safety and comfort are not valued. These symbols have no place on our campus, and we will advocate for the student voice by helping to find an off-campus solution.

Support for Student Activists

  • While previous administrations have remained relatively neutral in supporting student activism, the Martin Administration will work to partner with student activists to ensure that the student voice is reflected not only in the work Student Government will do, but also in the actions taken by the UNC administration.

Support for the LGBTQ+ Community

  • Historically, the LGBTQ+ community has experienced a lack of support from the university. The resources currently available do not meet the actual needs of the community. The Martin Administration will advocate for better resources, especially mental health resources, for members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender students. The Martin Administration will also seek to help bring the LGBTQ+ community together through a network that includes resources for those who have not come out to speak anonymously with those who can offer support and advice.

Accessibility and Transition for Incoming Students

  • Students coming from a diverse array of backgrounds have widely different experiences before coming to Carolina and have different needs when adjusting to university life. These communities have suffered from a lack of support and members often feel isolated. The Martin Administration will work to create better support networks and University resources for feeling more at home at Carolina.

Graduate and Professional Students

  • While previous administrations have remained relatively neutral in supporting student activism, the Martin Administration will work to partner with student activists to ensure that the student voice is reflected not only in the work Student Government will do, but also in the actions taken by the UNC administration.
